“Bard” is the content editor that is at the core of the Statamic editing experience.
At first glance it looks like a simple and standard text editor. And it is a very good text editor, one that you should feel instantly familiar with. There are just the right number of options giving you power but without the overwhelm of millions of buttons.
It supports:
Standard text editing elements like headings and bullet points
Modern quick formatting (like automatic conversion of hyphens at the start of a line into bullet points)
Sometimes you’ll see it with a full tool bar of options and occasionally you’ll only see some editing options. We set up the appropriate editing options when we create your site.
Set up with super powers
However, Bard has a super power. It is a structured text editor that you can insert “sets” into of just about any kind of content you can imagine.
What are sets?
Sets are reusable content blocks that give you flexibility when building your page content. Think of them as different building blocks you can add, rearrange, and customise as needed.
In a Bard field, you can mix regular text editing with special content blocks (sets). For example, you might have sets for:
Images
Quote blocks
Video embeds
Button groups
Tables
Each set has its own fields and options. You can add as many sets as you need, in any order, and drag them around to rearrange your content. This gives you much more control than a standard text editor, whilst keeping everything organised and consistent with your site's design.
When you're editing, you'll see a "+" button that lets you choose which type of set to insert. Simply click it, select the set you want, fill in the fields, and continue building your content.
Each site comes preconfigured with helpful sets such as images, buttons and videos. Part of the design process for any Statamic site is to create any other sets you need to help you easily manage your content.
