Last year Nelson Central School Community Group came up with a brand new fundraising idea – they organised the Central Challenge Rogaine Event and Fun Day. It was so successful it has now turned into an annual event. ‘Rogaine’ or team orienteering is an adventure that promises to offer exercise, teamwork and a whole lot of fun.
Spokesperson Janja Heathfield says the Nelson Central Challenge will be a day packed with family fun, spot prizes, stalls, games and activities.
“We’re setting this up for all abilities and levels of fitness so people can plan their route to visit as many checkpoints as they can in the time allowed, with each check point giving different points depending on how hard it is to reach,” Heathfield said. “Strategy and route selection become part of the challenge. The first level is designed to be fun for families with younger kids and takes just one hour, while there’s a second course designed to challenge more experienced rogainers, set by an experienced map setter – it’s really something to get your teeth into and will take up to two hours.”
At Avoca Web Design we are actively involved in our community and we enjoy giving back in the way of pro-bono work. Each year we choose a project, and when the Nelson Central School Community Group approached us to see if we could help, we said yes. This one is close to Brendyn’s heart as he has a daughter at Nelson Central. together they did the rogaine last year and are looking to team up again this year for the event (look out for the “Hipping Hoppos”).
We built a website that allows The Nelson Central Challenge to both advertise the event and take online registrations with credit card payment. The registrations are sent to an online airtable database so the team can easily manage them.
What a delightful project to be involved in and a wonderful event that embodies all of aspects that we love to foster: community, education and the outdoors.
