How Much Does a Website Cost in New Zealand? (Real Numbers, No Guessing)

Chances are you've already Googled this and come away more confused than when you started.

That's because most answers are vague on purpose. "It depends" isn't helpful when you're trying to plan a budget. So here's what we actually charge, and what other reputable agencies in New Zealand typically charge, broken down by the type of site you need.

Small Business Websites

This is your bread-and-butter site. A handful of pages, your services, contact details, maybe a blog. Clean, professional, does the job well.

Design and development will typically run between $3,000 – $10,000 NZD.

Ongoing maintenance (which covers security updates, backups, and small changes) usually sits around $600 – $1,200 per year.

If you're a tradie, consultant, café, or local business wanting a solid online presence, this is your range.

Corporate Websites

More pages, more complexity, more integrations with your internal systems. These sites need to work harder, and the pricing reflects that.

Design and development: $8,000 – $40,000 NZD.

Maintenance: $1,000 – $10,000 per year, depending on how much is running under the hood.

Organisation, Science & Non-Profit Websites

Event calendars, donation portals, membership features. These add real complexity to what might look like a simple site on the surface.

Design and development typically lands between $4,000 – $50,000 NZD, and yes, that's a wide range. The thing is, non-profit and organisation websites can vary enormously in what they need to do, and the final cost will always come down to the scope of your specific project.

Maintenance runs $600 – $3,000 per year. Like the design costs, the range here really does come down to size and what the site needs to do.

E-commerce Websites

Selling online means your website is doing actual revenue work every day. Product listings, checkout, payment processing, subscriptions. It all adds up.

Design and development: $6,000 – $50,000 NZD.

Maintenance: $2,000 – $15,000 per year, covering security, backups, support, and any add-ons your store needs to keep running smoothly.

What's Actually Driving the Cost?

Here's the thing — the final number isn't random. Every quote should be traceable back to specific work. Here's what you're actually paying for:

Wireframing and design is where the real thinking happens. Before anyone writes a line of code, your designer should be mapping out the layout and user journey. Depending on the number of pages, expect this to sit somewhere between $500 – $5,000 (usually included in your overall quote).

Custom functionality is where costs can climb quickly. Booking forms, CRM integrations, members-only areas — each one takes real development time. Budget $1,000 – $15,000 depending on what you need.

Hosting and domain are ongoing costs most people underestimate. Hosting and maintenance typically runs $600 – $2,500 per year. E-commerce platforms like Shopify add another $60 – $300 per month. Your domain name is around $50 per year.

SSL certificates secure your site and are non-negotiable, especially for e-commerce. Most hosting providers include one for free, though some situations call for a paid certificate (up to $250 per year).

Ongoing support covers your regular updates, backups, and security patches, plus content work (or training if your team wants to manage things themselves). That's typically $50 – $300 per month, though some hosting and care packages bundle this in.

Staff training, if your team wants to manage the site in-house, usually runs $200 – $1,000 depending on the platform and how deep you want to go.

So, What Should You Actually Do With This?

Get quotes from at least two or three providers. Ask what's included in maintenance. Ask about hidden fees (platform add-ons, in particular, have a way of surprising people six months in). And choose someone who takes the time to understand what your business actually needs — not just someone who'll build what you asked for without asking the right questions first.

A well-built website isn't an expense. It's one of the hardest-working assets your business has.
