An Iconic Nelson organisation gets a new name and a new website

The Nelson School of Music has been an iconic part of the Nelson landscape since 1894. With the work proceeding on the rebuild at pace, the organisation has just unveiled a new brand and a new name The Nelson Centre of Musical Arts (NCMA).
This is an exciting time for NCMA to define a great vision for supporting music around the region. Changing your organisations name is always a big decision but we fully support NCMA and believe that their name change opens up new possibilities. Here’s how they describe the change

Why change the name?
It is our job as trustees to ensure that our organisation survives and stays relevant for another 100 years. The redevelopment of our facilities allows us to transform the way we deliver our musical offerings and services. Our identity needs to align with this and be fit for the modern era.
Providing clarity for all
To the outside world there is often confusion around who we are and what we do. We’re not a school in the traditional sense and there is a perception among many that we are an elite and exclusive organisation that focuses on classical music and musical training for only those who can afford it. This couldn’t be further from the truth. We are also much more than an education provider, we are a performance venue and venue hire is a vital core service that we offer.
Our new name, visual identity and strategy will help us to correct these misunderstandings.
Acknowledging our history
We must not lose sight of our history, however. Our unique and colourful past and our buildings permanently remind us of our heritage. To reflect this, our auditorium will be known as the Nelson School of Music Auditorium.

We’ve worked hard with Clare, Robyn and the team at NCMA to create a brand new website to support this rebrand. The priorities were:

  • Make the Teachers, Performance Groups and NCMA classes easy to search by name, location, level and other criteria
  • Organise the information on the site in an accessible way
  • Present a modern crisp brand image

We also had the pleasure of collaborating with Dave Knight at Nimbus Advertising on the design.
