Is having a mobile-friendly website important?

The quick answer? Yes, you do.

The more nuanced and longer, answer is that you need a mobile-friendly website simply because that is where the future of the web design is heading. Desktops are becoming less used, and with the increased usage of smartphones, this is the new wave of connectivity that you must be a part of.

Over 50% of website visitors are now using their mobile devices to view websites. This is still growing and therefore, how your website looks when viewed on a mobile phone is becoming increasingly more important. In fact, Google made a change in 2017 which meant that it started to look at the mobile version of your website to determine the ranking (what page of Google results your website appears on).

Increasingly Google is just using the mobile version of your website to determine your ranking. This makes sense because Google is focused on user friendly experience. If your website is dated and not mobile optimised it might be time to think about a design upgrade.

What sorts of things make a mobile friendly website?

Have you ever tried to read the text or press a button on your phone that was too small? Or what about a link you’d like to check out but you can’t get your finger on it?

Other things like layout, sometimes it looks great to have the text on the left and an image on the right (i.e. in 2 columns). Usually on mobile there isn’t enough room for two columns and unless the web developer does some “jiggery-pokery” the image will appear under the text by default. This not always the best placement.
