wordpress 6.6 features

You’ve probably noticed the the WordPress content editing experience for blog posts and other repeating content looks a lot better these days than it did in days of yore.

The “Gutenburg” editor project has been ongoing since WordPress version 5.0 (Dec 2018) and has continued to improve over time. Most of those changes are incremental and have added nice content editing features.

The new version of WordPress launched last week (WordPress 6.6) and it gives us a major quality of life design improvement

New in v6.6 – Much improved and more initiative post settings

Most blogs use a “Featured Image” to display an image in the blog page as well as on the post itself.

Avoca also leans heavily on this feature when we build out other types of custom content such as a projects section or a team page. Each post in that section will have a featured image for the project or team member image to go in.

As part of the ongoing improvements to WordPress by the core development team, the post status section at the top right of the editor has had an overhaul. Several elements that previously had their own section in the sidebar have been moved into one place to make them easy to find.

The post status block now contains:

  • The featured image
  • The post except
  • an overview of the post length (number of words and reading time)
  • Revisions
  • The link to the content
  • Last edited time

For pages it also includes:

  • The page parent
  • Order

This change is fantastic as it’s going to make it much faster to find and work with post settings in the future. What were previously separate sections in the editor are now brought together in one place.

We’re excited to see what other improvements come to the editor in future versions.

Happy editing.
